Social Designer Joke Quintens connects neighborhood to recognition site

The project engages not only immediate local residents but also a variety of neighborhood organizations that work with vulnerable people. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone, regardless of their background, has a voice and contributes to the creation of a shared space.

Social design is all about creating Wetopia, a collective energy for more ‘us’. According to Quintens, Wetopia consists of three superpowers:

  1. The power of new alliances: Forming a new “we” between people who share a challenge or problem but do not yet know each other.
  2. The power of place: The solution often lies in the context of the location itself. Whether it is a neighborhood in Cape Town or a neighborhood in Brussels, the local community plays a crucial role.

The power of doing: Concrete actions and tangible results are essential. This is more than just talk; it is about bringing about actual change.

“The Urban Jewel focuses on creating connection between people with a background of complex trauma from all over Belgium, as well as with the neighborhood. The national urban jewel will be placed in Square Marguerite Duras in Brussels, and the choice of this site will greatly influence the meaning and impact of the project.”

Community Involvement
“The strength of the place is reflected in the diversity of the people who live and work there. From the homeless to cultural workers, everyone plays a role in the project. Designing and placing beads in public space provides a tangible way to start conversations and build understanding around complex trauma. It’s a place to pause and find hope.”

Quintens emphasizes the importance of art as another language, a way to communicate imagination and possibilities. She quotes an apt slogan: “The only good nation is imagination.” “This highlights how artists and creative people are able to bring new perspectives and change.”

A Collective Effort
“The project involves not only the immediate neighborhood residents but also all kinds of neighborhood organizations that work with vulnerable people. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone, regardless of their background, has a voice and contributes to the creation of a common space.”

Quintens compares politicians to an umbrella: they try to provide protection, but often a collective effort is needed. “By turning the umbrella around and involving everyone, problems can be addressed collectively.”

The Role of Art
Art plays a central role in the project. “It provides a way to tell stories and engage people in a deeper, more emotional way. The diversity and willingness of people to collaborate and create is at the heart of the success of The City Jewel.”
